Relay Race FAQ

Okay… soooo… how does this work exactly?

The race is a Relay Race. Don’t worry, you don’t have to carry a baton like in your elementary school track and field days, but you will be put on teams of 3 (for the 10k) or 4 (for the 5k). If you don’t specify your preferred teammates, we will find some friends for you. The first person starts at 8:30am, runs their distance (5km or 10km) and then when they come back, they will high five the next person and they will go do the same. Repeat. Then your team is done when the last team member finishes their race. Plan to stick around to cheer your teammates on!

What if someone on the team is there for a good time AND a long time?

Don’t stress. If someone is out on course for a long time, we will force start the next team member. Forced start times are as follows:

10k

  • 10:00am- Runner #2

  • 11:30am- Runner #3

5k

  • 9:45am- Runner#2

  • 10:30am- Runner #3

  • 11:45am- Runner #4

Final race cut off is 1:00pm.

So, about that baton hand-off?

Again, nope. No baton. But you will need to hand off your team’s timing chip. You’ll need to be watching for your teammate to cross the finish line, come into the transition area, and make the hand off. The next person’s race time won’t start until you cross the timing mat and are off to the races. (Yes, it is chip timed!)

Are there age/gender categories?

Yes! Sort of. We want to give a special shout out to our youth racers, so they get their own age category to place in. So that means, if you are over 16, you’re just considered old. Sorry ‘bout that.  And yes, we have ranking and prizes for ‘male’, ‘female’ and ‘other’ gender categories!

Can I bring my best friend?

Sorry, no dogs allowed on course and please no dogs at the start finish line. But please do spam our email novprojectcan@gmail.com with pictures of your puppy cause dogs are the best.

What about tunes on course?

We prefer that you don’t use headphones on course. We want you to be soaking up all the fun on course and hearing all the incredible volunteers out there cheering you on. If you do choose to run with headphones in, keep it low enough so that you can be aware of volunteers, other racers, traffic and pedestrians.

What am I supposed to do if I’m not running?

Party goes from 8am-1pm at Race Headquarters at the Alberta Legislative Grounds, and trust us, you are gonna want to hang around. That’s all we will say for now!

What about snackies on course?

We are so pumped to have The Bridge Sports Therapy and Training, and Fast Trax as our aid station sponsors. They will have water, electrolytes and run fuel ready for ya. And once you’re back at the start/finish we will have food options available to you. We also recommend bringing snacks/lunch so that you don’t miss any of the fun while cheering on.

What about the loo?

We will have plenty of porta potties available at Race Headquarters for that last minute pee. Including special access toilets. We will also have menstrual products available, just to make sure all emergencies are covered so you can get back to racing.

What if I fall and hurt myself?

Don’t worry, we got you covered for that too. First aid and medic support available to make sure you are cared for, no matter what is going on. In case of emergencies, call 911. For all non-emergencies, please call (TBD) to contact the first aid team.

What about getting there and parking?

The address for the Alberta Legislature Grounds is 10800-97 Ave and the start/finish will be at the south end of the grounds, on Fortway Drive NW. Nearby bus stops are #1567, #1792, #1991, #1629, #1728 or #1993. Going to the Government Transit Center works too. If you’re taking the train, get off at Government Centre stop on the Capital Line train.

Parking is very limited in the area so we encourage that you walk there, or take transit. If you do drive, expect to park far away and walk.
